Security. It’s an important topic when it comes to mail, and every decision can impact results. For example, envelope flaps help keep the contents of your policy mailpiece safe and sound, inside the envelope.

Flaps are available in a variety of styles – straight, wallet, remittance, baronial, bangtail and more. With so many options to choose from, how do you know which flap style is right for your campaign? Answering two basic questions will help you choose the optimal flap for your mailing*:

What’s Being Inserted?

Are you sending a buck slip, z-fold or half-fold insert? Or is your mail a more heavy-duty, thicker mailing (e.g., a policy book)? A thick, bulky mailpiece usually calls for a longer flap to adequately fold over and completely cover the seal gum area. If your mailing is super thick, adding a second score on the seal flap also helps because it allows the seal flap to bend and totally cover the mail inserts.

What Type of Inserting Equipment Will Be Used?

If your mailpiece will be processed on an inserter, you’ll need to know both the make and model of the inserter. Different inserters are compatible with different flap styles and different custom envelope sizes. Even if inserter manufacturers request a commercial flap, they’ll also likely have minimum and maximum requirements for length, height and potentially preferred flap angle, so it’s important to cover these points.

Because there is no such thing as a “one-size-fits-all flap” for inserting equipment, it’s best to get a sample of the entire mailing package to test on the inserting equipment.
